1. Choose the height
Beside the bed
Choose a lamp about 1 to 1.5 times the height of the nightstand. Sitting up in bed, the bottom of the shade should be around chin height, roughly 42 in above the floor.

Living room
Most side-table lamps are 28–32 in tall. Keep the lamp no taller than 1.5 times the table, and check that the bottom of the shade sits near your eye level when seated. Together, table and lamp often come to about 58–64 in.
2. Check the proportions
Shade and table
The shade usually takes about a third of the lamp’s height, and it should be narrower than the table so the lamp doesn’t overhang it.
What to measure
- Table or nightstand: height and width, in inches
- Mattress top: height from the floor
- Seat: height of the sofa or chair seat
