Find your ceiling light size
For flush and semi-flush ceiling lights. Use these guides with the width and height in the productβs Dimensions tab.
Drawn to scale: a flush mount and a semi-flush light, each with 7 ft below.
1. Choose the type
By ceiling height
Flush mounts sit tight to the ceiling. Semi-flush lights hang about 4β8 in below it; anything lower counts as a pendant.
| Ceiling | Good choice | Tallest fixture with 7 ft below |
|---|---|---|
| Under 8 ft | flush mount | up to 6 in (at 7 ft 6 in) |
| 8 ft | flush mount | up to 12 in |
| 9 ft | flush or semi-flush | up to 24 in |
| 10 ft or higher | semi-flush, pendant or chandelier | up to 36 in or more |
On an 8 ft ceiling, a light that hangs more than about 6β8 in can make the room feel low.
2. Choose the width
Width for the room
Add the roomβs length and width in feet. The total is a good starting width in inches. With a ceiling above 9 ft, you can go about 3 in wider for each extra foot.
| Room | Fixture width |
|---|---|
| 10 Γ 10 ft | about 20 in |
| 10 Γ 12 ft | about 22 in |
| 12 Γ 12 ft | about 24 in |
| 12 Γ 14 ft | about 26 in |
| 14 Γ 16 ft | about 30 in |
| 16 Γ 18 ft | about 34 in |
| 18 Γ 20 ft | about 38 in |
Hallways and large rooms
In a hallway, space ceiling lights about 8β10 ft apart. A large room may need two or more fixtures, or extra lamps.
