1. Choose the blade span
By room size
Multiply the room’s length by its width in feet to get the area.
| Room area | Blade span |
|---|---|
| Up to 75 sq ft | 29–36 in |
| 76–144 sq ft | 36–42 in |
| 144–225 sq ft | 44 in |
| 225–400 sq ft | 50–54 in |
| Over 400 sq ft | 56 in or larger |
Example: a 12 × 14 ft room is 168 sq ft, so look for a span of about 44 in.
2. Check the height and clearance
Height
Keep the blades at least 7 ft above the floor; 8–9 ft is ideal for airflow. Under an 8 ft ceiling, choose a flush (hugger) fan. Higher ceilings need a downrod: about 6 in for a 9 ft ceiling, longer as the ceiling rises.
Clearance
Keep the blade tips at least 18 in from walls, and about 30 in if you can. Keep them clear of cabinets, beams and open doors.
What to measure
- Room: length and width, in feet
- Ceiling: height from the floor, and its slope if any
- Clearance: distance from the fan spot to the nearest wall or cabinet
