Buying lighting for resale or on behalf of a qualifying tax-exempt organization? You may be eligible to order without sales tax. Here's what we'll need to review your request.
Exemption takes effect only after we confirm approval.
Eligibility
Eligibility depends on who's buying the lighting, how it will be used, and where it's being delivered.
Businesses buying lighting to resell as merchandise may qualify with the right resale documentation.
Design professionals may qualify when lighting is purchased for resale. Trade membership alone isn't enough.
Certain nonprofits and other organizations may qualify with documentation accepted by the delivery state.
Qualifying agency purchases may be exempt when the purchaser and payment meet the applicable rules.
Purchasing lighting for an installation project or for your own space? Please read our important guidelines before applying.
Before You Apply
A complete application helps us review your request without going back and forth for missing details.

The Process
Four simple steps to get your request to our team.
Use the email address linked to your Vinlighting account or previous orders.
Fill in the appropriate form, include the seller details above, and sign it where required.
Submit your business details, delivery state, purchase purpose, and supporting document.
We'll review your request and let you know if anything else is needed before approval.
After Approval
Once we've approved your request, use the same email address at checkout that's associated with your approved Vinlighting account.
Your exemption can apply to orders covered by the documents we have on file. Orders shipped to a different state—or purchased for a different use—may still be taxable.
Please check the tax amount before placing your order. If something doesn't look right, contact us before checking out.
Good to Know
A valid certificate is only one part of the review. How the lighting is used matters, too.
Resale certificates generally can't be used for fixtures kept for your own home, office, or showroom.
Buying fixtures for construction or installation work isn't always treated the same as reselling merchandise.
A certificate accepted for one state or type of purchase might not cover another.
They can cover repeat qualifying purchases, not every order or every purchase purpose.
Vinlighting's Trade Program is separate from sales tax exemption. Discounts do not establish tax-exempt status.
A Few Common Questions
Yes. Interior designers may qualify when lighting is bought for resale and the purchase meets the state's rules. Designing a space for a client doesn't, by itself, make every fixture tax exempt.
Those purchases may be taxed differently from merchandise bought for resale. Tell us how the fixtures will be used so we can review the right documentation for your order.
Usually not. Those documents can support your business details, but a completed resale or exemption certificate is generally needed to establish an exempt purchase.
Not always. A valid blanket certificate may cover repeat purchases of the same qualifying kind. A single-use certificate is limited to the transaction specified.
Not necessarily. The documentation and rules can change with the delivery state. If you're shipping to a new state, we may need additional information.
Trade pricing and sales tax exemption are separate. If you're eligible for both, your applicable trade benefits can still apply, but the tax treatment depends on the order.
We review requests individually. We'll reach out if we need more details. If you need an exemption for an upcoming order, please apply before checking out.
Check that you're using your approved account email. The delivery state or purchase purpose may also fall outside your approved exemption. If you're unsure, please email us before paying.
Send us your order number and supporting documents. We'll review whether an adjustment is possible under the rules for that transaction. Refunds are not automatic.
Yes, when the purchase qualifies under the applicable state rules. These organizations may need different documents from a standard resale certificate.
